The fourth of twelve children, Dolly Rebecca Parton was born in Sevier County, Tennessee, in 1946. Her father farmed tobacco. Later in life, she would recount how impoverished her family was, recalling that her father gave a bag of oats as payment to the doctor who assisted in her delivery. Her life has always revolved on music, and many of her early performances took place in churches. Parton began making appearances on The Cas Walker Show at the age of nine, and she eventually signed with Goldband Records, a tiny company out of Louisiana. On the day following her high school graduation in 1964, Dolly relocated to Nashville. She rapidly became successful as a songwriter.
